Starling Dance

One of my personal favorite subjects, This is what's left of West Pier, Brighton. In the winter I love to just sit and watch these starlings dancing above it.

OPM02

This appears to be my watchers favorite at the moment!

I am a serious photographer from the South of England. I have always had a passion for the natural world and it is my intention to try to convey that love to others through my artwork.

I owe much of my talent to my friends here on DA, before I joined I really had little idea about the true disciplines of photography. Although I spent many years teaching myself the technical side and building up my kit, it has been here on DA that I have really been able to develop my skills for the "creation of captured art".

Devious Info

  • Current Residence: Hampshire UK
  • Interests: The world it's nature and it's music
  • Shell of choice: The one I hide in.
  • Favourite game: Photoshop.
  • Personal Quote: Some people know what they need, others need what they know.
  • Tools of the Trade: Tools don't matter, Knowledge does! But a sturdy tripod is essential. (Kit List in scraps!!)

Light waits for no man. You're either out there, or you miss it. Forever.
I have had cameras since I was about 16/17. My dad gave me the first during my parents divorce (guilt I think!). That was a SLR well before digital. I loved owning it and I loved using it but I never got anywhere photographically, although I liked to think otherwise ;).....
I broke that whilst in Iceland, big mistake I wish I had broken and replaced it before being in such a fantastic setting! I bought a DSLR to replace that in 2003, taught myself basic PS skills and then shot JPG's (something I will hardly ever do now!) for about a year before I dared myself to gradually move away from AUTO and away from JPG. I upgraded from that (a 300D) to my 5D almost as soon as it came out, nothing had come close at the price and I had some savings.
BUT, and here is MY answer to your question, I can honestly say that I used the first 4 years (of going digital) reading every magazine, teaching myself and practicing (whist having a lot of fun!) and it is only in the last 2 to 3 years that I have really been taking pictures properly ie of the right subjects, with he correct settings and filters and most importantly at the right moments.... So at the moment I honestly feel that I have been doing this for 4 or 5 years and now (in the last 2 years) I have begun to think about composition, planning and meaning behind images...... Now i am attempting to make a list of places I want to visit (in the UK) and marking maps and trying to get to some of them, it's the HARDEST step yet.

So your self taught, that's pretty cool. My 40D is my first camera which I got almost 2 years ago this Christmas coming. It's served me well but when I first got it I was the same shooting auto and JPG. I then moved to RAW and started using manual mode which was difficult at first but once I read magazines and started my course in digital photography I realized it's easier than I thought. Speaking of my course I have finished it now and got my diploma in the mail, need to get it framed before it goes to wreck and ruin. I'm going to take a photo of myself holding it and upload it as a new ID here. Back on topic, I have only started thinking about compositions, light and techniques more lately and I guess that's why my work is slowly improving. For Christ sake I use to HDR the shit out of my images because I knew no better so anything is better than that. Do you think you'll ever travel over here to Australia? I would love to meet and go shooting sometime :)

It's all about perfection behind and in front of the lens, that's what I believe makes a good photograph.
Been over there dude, would love to return sometime. I got as far as seeing Sydney and moving up to Byron Bay, I loved it.
I think you can teach yourself anything if you really wanna learn.

You would have passed through my small town then on the way to Sydney. I live on the Mid North Coast ;)
